U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on the 13th that oil prices are expected to remain high for some time to come and may even rise further. Previously, in an attempt to calm market sentiments, Wright had been consistently claiming that oil prices might fall soon.

Wright stated at an economic forum held in Washington, the capital of the United States, that only when there are "substantial" signs of recovery in the shipping of the Strait of Hormuz would oil prices be likely to fall, and this change might occur "in a few weeks".

Wright also mentioned the situation of Venezuela's oil production on the 13th, stating that since January 3rd, 150 million barrels of Venezuelan oil have been sold.

On the early morning of January 3, 2026, the US military carried out a raid in Venezuela, forcibly taking control of Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife and bringing them to the United States. Trump later stated that the US would "manage" Venezuela until a "safe" transition is implemented, and major US oil companies would significantly increase their investment in Venezuela.

Affected by the situation in the Middle East, international oil prices have soared significantly. The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the International Energy Agency called on all countries not to hoard energy or control exports in order to avoid further impact on the current tight energy supply.
